april showers bring may flowers

All of the fruit trees in the orchard are leafing out but today on May Day the only ones with flowers are the two plum trees.

the east plum tree

The west plum tree
While not quite flowering yet the west apple is getting pink flower buds and should be close.

  1. Plum blossoms are so pretty! Spring looks like it has arrived on your farm. I don't have a plum. Besides citrus, the easiest fruit bearing trees to grow here are certain varieties of peach, because the chill hours are low. Have a wonderful weekend. xoxo Su

    1. Thanks Su, our fruit trees are fairly new and we haven't gotten a crop yet from the plums or pears. I have been tempted to try a peach but we are just one zone too far north so it is kind of iffy as to whether they would survive our winters. Some days I am really tempted.

  2. We have a plum tree here, but I don't think you can eat the fruit. It's an ornamental tree...I believe. It popped just a few flowers today, in time for May day! It's a very well behaved tree! ;) Happy May!!

    1. Hi Kim, happy May to you as well. Glad to hear you have a well behaved tree. I bet it is gorgeous in the spring. Minnesota has a lot of ornamental trees, lots of pink, white and purple. Lots of flowering crab, i think. On the farm we have some buckthorn that is starting to bloom. They are an ugly tree with lots of thorns and are quite invasive but in the spring they have this heavenly perfume from their tiny white flowers. And later the honeysuckle that is at the outside edge of our grove will smell nice as well. Does your tree have a great fragrance?
